Building Your Own Masonry Heater

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. The masonry heater has been around in one form or another since 5000 B.C and during that time has developed into a range of shapes, styles and capabilities. As such there are many people who look to build one in their own home.

Building a masonry heater is a skill in itself, ensuring you have the right amount of airflow, that the flue gas channels while convoluted still find their way out of the chimney and that the correct materials have been used to avoid damage when fired. As such we would always recommend you speak to an expert stone mason or buy some plans before proceeding.

However a DIY masonry heater is not beyond your reach with the Ecco Stove®. The build is very simple and can be carried out in under an hour between two people. The modular construction of the stove allows for a simple stacking process without any need for cement, glue or mortar between joints. Each piece neatly slots together with a rope seal forming the seal.

As with any wood fired heater you will need to conform to the regulation of the country you are in and this may require hiring an engineer to sign off your work.

Once you have built and flued your Ecco Stove® it is easy to get used to the simple control method. Before long you will not only be heating the area around you but circulating the heat into other areas of your home.
